For the Love of Classic Architecture

A Rare 1917 Craftsman Restored by Two Passionate Designers

Blue Jay Gables is a 1917 craftsman house with rare twin peak gables and period-specific curved side rakes. After 5 years of dedication to the integrity of the home's original design and materials, the restoration has been realized.

Deidre and Mark fell in love with the architecture of their home in 2020 and they achieved a very high standard for its rejuvenation. While they had planned for this to be their forever home, a bittersweet decision was made to move on.

It’s time to invite new homeowners to enjoy this lovingly restored property.

The Story Behind the Name

Where Blue Jays, Craftsmanship, and Nature Come Together

Blue Jay Gables found its name in both its architecture and its fantastic blue feathered visitors. One day, a very small baby blue jay appeared on the back patio. Mama called out, encouraging Baby to fly but it just hopped along following her voice. Next-door neighbours joined the watch for two days while Baby was on the ground and Mama kept trying. Finally, they succeeded and flew away together!

The handmade cedar silhouettes of Mama and Baby can be found at the roofline between the twin gables at the back of the house, honouring their deep connection and perseverance. A larger bluejay rests under the front gables as a reminder that there is beauty in strength. The sky blue soffit under the roofline frames the other cheerful colours inspired by nature.

House Exterior

The exterior of the house was brought back to its former glory with new structure where needed, period appropriate cedar lap and shake siding, cedar trim, and restored period features such as the decorative green roof brackets. The beautiful sky blue soffit is made of approximately 1000 handcrafted cedar planks that were painted and installed one at a time. The fascia was replaced with freshly cut curves to match the originals; stretching to the high gable peaks and across the lower roofs. The bespoke porch skirting was designed in layers of painted cedar to display the twin gable house style with the addition of the rising sun and full moon. The front staircase is a stunning display of circa 1890 restored newel posts from Nova Scotia, deep solid cedar treads, and custom solid maple handrails. The porch is comprised of restored elements such as solid wood perimeter wall and cap, tongue and groove ceiling with crown molding, craftsman style posts and hardwood wainscoting. Custom cedar decking with herringbone inlay accented by pine pegs create a warm welcome. Guests will notice the handcrafted bronze doorbell and original front door. The pinnacle of this house is the roof. It has been reframed for optimal valley sloping, is protected by the top quality ice and water shield (Soprema), and capped with a lifetime roof called Euroshield. Euroshield Vermont Slate is an eco friendly rubber roof product manufactured in Canada. It is environmentally responsible, resistant to high winds and repels all hail. It is quiet, insulating, and strong. This high performing roof shingle also has an amazing appearance of slate, which is important to the period look and feel of the house. The combination of metal valleys and Euroshield shingles along with matching ridge cap on all ridges and gables, makes this the most beautiful and impervious roof available. The investment has been made so the next homeowners will never have to replace it.
